My friend Dawid found a photo album while exploring an abandoned house. The images contained within are in varying states of decay, thus turning previously quite banal snapshots into one of the most moving collections of unintentional art I’ve seen for ages. Images below by Dawid, original photographer unknown. See the whole set here.
Mary Dillwyn’s Empty Pages
Mary Dillwyn (1816-1906) is believed to be Wales’s first female photographer. Her photos are interesting in their own right, not just because of who she was. Even so, I find myself more fascinated by some of the aspects of her legacy that I expect have been even more overlooked than the photos themselves. Specifically, the many empty pages from her 1853 Llysdinam album. Here is an excellent overview of pages 37 to 57.
